ER closures in Canada — frequently asked questions

Are there ER closures in Canada right now?

Yes — this page shows current emergency department closures, temporary reopenings and service disruptions across Canada, updated continuously. Right now we're tracking 105 active closures. The feed reflects official provincial health-authority notices as they change.

How do I know if my local ER is open?

Pick your province above to see local closures, or open your hospital page for its current status and live wait time. If it is open, you can set a wait-time alert on its page. To keep up with closures across the country, watch this feed or get them by email.

Which provinces have the most ER closures?

Closures cluster in rural and northern communities — especially Saskatchewan, Manitoba, Ontario and the Maritimes — where a single physician or nurse gap can close an ER overnight. The transparency report shows the full per-province picture.

How often is the feed updated?

Detection runs about every 15 minutes against official provincial sources, and the feed updates as soon as a change is confirmed. Timestamps reflect when a change was detected, so they are approximate to within that window.

What is the difference between a closure, a reopening and a disruption?

A closure means the emergency department is not accepting patients, often overnight or for a defined period. A reopening means it has resumed service. A disruption covers reduced hours, ambulance diversion or limited service that falls short of a full closure. Each update is labelled on its card.

Is there an API or data feed for Canadian ER closures?

Yes. There is a free JSON API and an RSS feed, free for non-commercial use with attribution, plus commercial licensing for history, bulk export and higher limits. Developers can grab a free key in a minute.

Can I embed this ER status feed on my own site?

Yes — a free embeddable widget shows live ER status for Canada or a single province. It needs no key and includes attribution automatically.
